2016 events

The 2016 Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival was held on June 4, 2016. One notable entry was the Polynesian Concept. She was built in 1968 as a racing catamaran for Buddy Ebsen, star of the TV series 'The Beverly Hillbillies' and later 'Barnaby Jones.' Though constructed in Southern California, Polycon was designed by Rudy Choy, one of the best marine architects of his time and a famous catamaran designer from Hawaii. Polycon competed in the 1968 Trans Pacific Yacht Race (Transpac) from Los Angeles to Honolulu, finishing first overall, correcting over another famous and much larger 60 foot catamaran, Gun Smoke, owned and skippered by actor James Arness.
